What Am I ❓#9 – Horse’s Eye

Check out the other What Am I games >>

Wow! There were 139 total entries, of which 89 entries got the answer spot on: a horse’s eye. Madelyn K. was entry #82, so she is the winner of this What Am I? contest. If you haven’t seen the email yet, please check it and respond ASAP. You have 48 hours to claim your prize.

I confess I did not think this one through, forgetting that “prey” type of animals share the horizontal pupil (“in order to see you better, my dear“) to keep a wider vision for those predators like wolves and cougars. That being said, a great number of you guessed “goat eye,” and yes, it could have been either, but the picture I actually used was of a horse’s eye. I will work hard not to make that mistake (getting something too close) next time.

The next greatest number of guesses (after “goat eye”) was the choice “owl’s eye.” Umm … have you ever seen an owl up close, especially in the dark? Yes, that’s right. All birds, especially owls, have ROUND eyes. The picture below compares some of the eye guesses. The owl is the top left, and doesn’t look anything like a horse’s (or goat’s, for that matter) eye.

Some guessed “cat” or even “lizard.” However, small predators tend to have vertical pupil slits. They need to be able to see well to hunt, down near the ground and through the grass. The cat’s eye is the lower left, and though some lizards’ eyes look round, none have horizontal pupil slits. Fun Fact:

Fun fact: Larger prey animals like mountain lions, wolves, and bears have round eyes. If the animal is tall enough to see above the grass, their pupils are round. Cats, even though they are cousins to mountain lions, have vertical slits because they are small and need to be able to see well to hunt down near the ground, much like lizards, snakes, and even alligators.

Isn’t it amazing how God created the perfect kind of eye for each species, even making different eyes for “big cats” and “little cats.” Thanks for playing. I have another What Am I? planned for the first week of November, so stay tuned! (Prize will be a Circle C or Goldtown 16-ounce tumbler!)

For this What Am I, you need to be specific. For instance, I posted a Sunflower for one of the What Am I games. If you answered “flower,” I’m afraid that was not specific enough. “Sunflower” was what you needed to answer. Hope that helps with this month’s guessing game.

Fill in the Google Form with your answer. As usual, the guessing game runs one week, Tuesday, October 3 – Tuesday, October 10. Winner announced on Wednesday, October 11.
