Circle C 2023 Contest Winners

This is the day everyone has been waiting for, so drum roll and get ready to congratulate the winners of the 2023 Circle C annual writing contest. Also, I just realized it is the tenth-year anniversary edition! I launched the contest back in 2013, and this year’s contest is 2023. First of all, here is the cover flat that I just uploaded this morning to KDP. I need to get a proof copy ASAP so I can get the books sent and mail the prizes. KDP is not very fast with either sending out proof copies and especially not with sending the actual books (usually two weeks+). *sigh*

If anybody sees any typos, holler about it in the comments. I can easily change and fix. One young writer’s family has not yet responded to my email (sent twice), but I could not wait any longer. I included his name and story, but also (ages 6-9), young Daniel does not have a bio. He has time, since I only ordered the proof copy so I can edit it. I can easily slip his bio in there. But also, alas, since I have no mailing address, I can’t send him any prizes either. But maybe they’re on holiday or something. I hope I do hear back soon.

Okay, moving on to the winners’ circle. This image shows the title page and winners’ page from the interior pages. In case you can’t read the tiny print, I will list everything below.

AGES 6-9

  • 1st Place: Ellia Ulrich, age 8 – “The Barn Fire”
  • 2nd Place: Selah Morris, age 9 – “The Perilous Storm”
  • 3rd Place: Daniel Kondor, age 8 – “The Peppery Pie”
  • HM: Marenn Harris – “The Rodeo of Dreams & Nightmares”

AGES 10-13

  • 1st Place: Toriana Huber, age 12 – “Heartache Healed by Love”
  • 2nd Place: Naomi F., age 10 – “Through Dark Times There Is a Light”
  • 3rd Place: Josie Leahy, age 13 – “A Final Gift”
  • HM: Emma Atcheson, age 13 – “The Gift of Forgiveness”

AGES 14-17

  • 1st Place: Alivia Ulrich, age 17 – “A Change of Heart”
  • 2nd Place: Isabel Prather, age 13 – “An Open Door”
  • 3rd Place: I.M.J. Wood, age 17 – “The Grace to Forgive”
  • HM: Honorable Mention: Leah Knelsen, age 17 – “Thank You, Lord”

What About My Contest Entry?

I know that is your next question. I did not place. Will you still “publish” my story for all to read? Answer: Absolutely!

I am happy to start a new list of contest stories to keep you all reading for weeks. In order to see your story posted, you must contact me via the contact form or an email. Please do not ask me in the comments to post your story. I need everything in one place.

Please include in your request . . .

  1. Name and age (so I know in which category to look).
  2. Your story’s title (so I don’t have to open each document to look for a name).

Also, I have a book deadline for Ocean of No Return and I’m only on chapter 8. So it might be some time before I can find a spare moment to post so many story entries. Note: They will be published “as is,” in other words no editing or formatting past what I did when I sent the entries to the judges.

I’m sure I will be hearing from you soon. I will reply to your email with your entry so you know I got it, then keep it safe until I can publish it. Thanks for your patience!

      1. This fall or next fall? And does this mean you’re going to switch back and forth between seasonal and annual?

      2. This coming fall. It’s still up in the air whether I will “switch” back to the Annual Contest. This was the tenth anniversary and I’d forgotten how time-consuming and costly it is to host. Bad timing too, I think. I committed to the annual contest before I agreed with my publisher to write two more Goldtown books. All the formatting and uploading and collecting the prizes, etc. are coming at the same time that I need to be furiously writing the books that are due.

But I will not say “never again,” because the Lord might want me to do it again.
