Horses Update

The weather in north Texas is very different from the weather in Andi Country (i.e. California foothills). From hot and humid to roaring thunder and pouring rain, most often all in one day. A huge storm was predicted for one evening/night last week, so all of us were pulled into work to help clean up the building mess, where Mr. M is building a huge shelter for the three horses to duck into if the sky opens up, The storm never materialized here in Glen Rose, but the horses love this building. The next day, they all tried to hog the window (that faces the stallion).

Rubicon, the stallion, however, did not like the fact that the girls and Kody vanished from his sight, even though the goat buck, Maverick, is his friend in the very next paddock. They can even touch noses and “talk” to each other, which they do quite often. But the girl MISSING? Horrible! He ran and kicked and whinnied, expressing his extreme displeasure. Two words for him: “Too bad.” And . . . “get used to it.” If it storms, Taffy, Kody, and Jewels have no shelter. Now, they do. Rubicon has a beautiful enclosure to stay dry.

Here’s a quickie video. Enjoy. More videos below.

Royale Dakota Moon (Kody) is officially for sale. Two different people have called Kristel (from her phone number off PaintedAcresRanch.com) and saw Kody. One fellow from Delaware wants him as a stallion, but the lady from Redmond, Washington, wants him as a gelding. We are going with GELDING. Over the past two months, Kody has grown a bunch of hormones. He is acting more and more like a stallion, and where Kristel could at one time just do his hooves standing in the round pen all by himself, now I have to hold him and make him mind so she can pick up his feet. And he HATES the farrier. Yep. Time to geld him so he turns back into the sweet, gentle colt we know and love. He is just shy of one year old and is 14hh! He is still growing and we expect he’ll be over 16hh and maybe even 17.

Kristel does not want to have to mess around with such a big boy, and honestly, she is in the business of selling horses. She can’t simply collect them (like Chad would say, “This is a working ranch. We SELL horses.” LOL)

Good news. Kristel says she will never sell Taffy. Taffy is a princess, so smart, and not afraid of new things. Hardly ever startles, and lets us do whatever we want with her: feet, ears, belly, tail, etc. She IS Taffy all the way. And petite too.

First video: KODY at 6.5 months old. Still sweet and quiet. Boy, those teenage hormones come quickly! He has really changed since this video. Notice that Kristel wears her crocs in the round pen with this big boy. Eeks.

Second video. KODY 12 months old, showing off what a great runner and big boy he is (to show the sellers his movement). He is turning into a stallion for sure!

  1. Kody is so BIG!! I can’t believe how much he’s grown! Also, what happened to Scarlet? (Kody’s Mom, I think that’s her name, right?) And to Minnie Mae? Are they still around? Because I feel like I haven’t seen them in a while…

      1. The original owner sold her because he discovered she was pg and wanted a trail horse, not a pg mare. Kristel bought her, and once “Star” the spicy, crazy filly was born a couple of years ago, he always wanted her back. But my DD wanted to get a palomino out of her (since the sire only throws buckskin or pally), so she promised she would sell Scarlett back after Kody was weaned. To her surprise, she discovered that Scarlett was really “Shays Sweet Olena,” a papered quarter horse, it meant Kody could be super registered! She DNA tested to confirm, but the owner had lost the papers. She basically sold Scarlett back cuz she was not an easy keeper (high maintenance with food, hungry all the time) and too much mare for her to mess with. She got back what she originally paid for her, so it all worked out and she got Kody, who is worth between $10,000 – $15,000 (and if he turns chocolate palomino, it’s the high end of his value.
