The real-life Taffy never fails to surprise us. For one thing . . . *gasp* it appears that our golden palomino filly is turning into a chocolate palomino! Her full adult color won’t show up until August, but today, Kristel got a big surprise bathing her and the after color. Unbelievable! I thought I’d share a few photos because I know you all like to keep up with Taffy. She is 14 months old and as calm a summer day. Check out her rump! It’s so chocolate. She has her daddy’s beautiful, long tail too. I included the picture of Taffy as a newborn. Why did we not think about her birth color being reflected in her final adult coloring?

Another surprise came when Kristel randomly decided to have Taffy tie up. Hmmm, sounds risky to me! Feeling that pull when she backs up might make a young horse freak out, and then Kristel would have a bit of a mess on her hands. (Sidenote: Lucy, a calm, older horse was tied in the round pen last January. Remember her? But somehow the “quick pull” knot did not get tied correctly. She went crazy when Kristel tried to take her temperature and jerked. And when she felt that tied up (she is perfectly trained to tie, so who knows why she freaked out?) she pulled and yanked and BENT THE ROUND PEN RAILING. She went lame and eventually she lay down and died. And she lost the foal. Tragedy.
Anyway, let’s see how Taffy does with her very first tying lesson. *yawn* And note . . . see Kody in the background. He is very jealous of all the attention Taffy is getting. It looks like he is pouting.
After her bath, Taffy looks pretty nice! But still . . . even in the sun, she’s not the “red gold” palomino she was earlier this spring. I wonder what she will end up as?
And speaking of color-change artists, Kody, whom we thought might be the chocolate (dark) palomino has turned into his adult color of a light honey-colored palomino. These two photos are the same Kody! July 2023 and now May 2024. Amazing fun trying to guess our horses’ colors! P.S. Since being gelded, Dakota has returned to his sweet, calm self. He is officially for sale.

Whatttt how cool! Thanks for sharing this update, Mrs M! 😀

Taffy is just gorgeous!!!! I can’t wait to see what color she ends up! It’s amazing how Kody went from far too light and Taffy went light to dark! I was reading about the chocolate palomino gene and it seems that if the horse was lucky enough to get it, there are certain feeds that will enhance and encourage the dark color to come out.

Oh! That is very interesting. I will have to tell my DD about that idea of feed . . . IF Taffy ends up chocolate. It would be so cool!
