Another Cover to Vote On

Maybe you thought this was another Jenny Grant cover. Nope, I will not burden you with yet another idea. You guys pretty much told me what you liked and I am satisfied and happy with your results. We’ll see what Kregel says.

In the meantime . . . my author friend, Phyllis Wheeler, asked me to put up a couple of covers she is playing around with. It’s the book of her heart, written a number of years ago, but the publisher is giving her rights back so she wants to republish it herself (and I say great idea!). Which cover do you think is more appealing, more eye-catching, etc.

Vote for #1 or #2. Please include WHY you like one cover over the other. I will not tell you which cover I like best until the votes are in. Also, feel free to give any other commentary about the covers and/or what you think might make them even better.

Here is a summary of the book. After running off to the Missouri woods to take a break from his mean, moody aunt, fourteen-year-old Richie, finds himself suddenly thrust fifty years back in timme and in a place with which he is not familiar. How did he get here? Where is he? How can he survive? And the bigger question: who sent him back? Could it be that oddly angelic truck driver?

Richie is a capable woodsman. But there’s much he doesn’t know, like how to survive a freak fall thunderstorm when he’s dressed for summer. A reclusive African-American woodsman offers help, but Richie is suspicious. And soon, he finds himself caught up in the prejudices of an earlier era and tries to help stop a terrible injustice (no spoil alerts from me). I think it’s a great book.

Oh, based on the cover only, which ages do you think would find this book one they would want to pick up and explore further (i.e. read the back cover copy, the first page, etc.)? Covers are so important, so let us know!

  1. I actually really like both!! The first is more pleasant to look at, but the background scenery is really nice to look at in the second one

  2. I like the first one better. The colors are a little bit brighter, and I feel like the character is more immersed in the scenery. On cover two, he looks slightly more pasted in or something, but that might be because of the weird ray of light by his head.

Also I don’t know if this was intentional, but the top bit above the title doesn’t really blend well with the rest of the cover. I feel like the bottom bit could maybe use a little bit more of the dark colors.

Aaaaand I don’t feel like the title has the same vibe as the rest of the cover, although again, that might be intentional.

  3. I like the first cover. It shows Richie more, and the sunlight in the second one doesn’t fit. Also adding to what Josie said, she’s right, the top part of the cover is a little too dark

  4. I like cover #1 best. I like how it keeps Richie the center of attention but still makes you wonder about that car on the road. The title might look good a little lighter and softer but it still looks pretty good!
