This was one of the most amazing and fun things Kristel and I have done with Jewels and Maggie during their pregnancies. We had heard about the old wive’s tale of being able to determine a foal’s gender in utero by using a regular nail and a length of string (yeah, right). But Kristel’s horse-breeding friend back in California says it’s 100% accurate.
So Kristel and I (Mrs. M) set out to prove it wrong or right. Since we know Jewel’s foal is a filly (via the scientific method of an ultrasound), it would be easy to prove or disprove. And as a bonus, we did this on Maggie to see what she might be having. You can check back next June to see if we are right or wrong about Maggie. What is she having? Watch the video! Then comment with what you think about this “old school” method (I’ve also heard the Amish use it to confirm a mare is bred). A think it’s true! What do you think?

That is so weird how that works, but really neat too! Now I’m wondering who first came up with that!
Thanks for sharing this video!
Good question! Probably way back in history…..
Wow! Thats pretty neat! I was kind of skeptical at first but now I’m looking forward to seeing if Maggie is going to have a colt or not!! Thanks for sharing the video!
What… how interesting! I will say I was pretty skeptical about the ‘nail and string’ same as Emma M, so this was quite interesting to watch. 😀
I’m excited to find out if Maggie’s foal will end up being a colt, or a filly!
Easy to verify next June!
That’s so cool ! How interesting .
Wow! That is Amazing! A Filly and a colt – yay!!
Did it work?
Absolutely!
