June 1885

These are my brothers’ favorite pages in the mail-order catalog. And there are pages and pages of them! Every size, and all quite reasonable. Simply order by mail and the pistol of your choice is delivered quickly and efficiently for a reasonable price, like $12.00. (Compare this with the 21st-century’s background checks and all kinds of regulations.)

I think I prefer one of these smaller size revolvers. Lucy had one of these small derringer-type pistols with one shot only. Or, the double derringer, with two shots (just in case). The trouble is, nobody in my family is going to trust me with a pistol until I learn to shoot better. I am a lousy shot–the worst in the family!

If you only knew how many times Chad has tried to teach me to shoot, well . . . it makes me shudder to think how the lessons always end in a huge argument. “I need a different teacher!” I usually holler. “I need a different student!” Chad yells back. I think he’s embarrassed that a Carter can’t shoot. Even Melinda shoots better than I can, and my mother is a crack shot. I saw her shoot a rattlesnake once. My eyes nearly popped out of my head at that.

I am happy to report that I can now shoot. Riley, bless his heart, took a Saturday morning to teach me. I reluctantly agreed, but now I am glad he talked me into it. (“The Shooting Lesson,” from Yosemite at Last: and Other Tales from Memory Creek Ranch).

I'm the author of the Circle C and Goldtown Adventures series. I blog as "Andi Carter," the main character in the Circle C series. She lives on a huge cattle ranch in 1880s California. These are her adventures.

  1. Yeah for sure πŸ˜‚ Thanks for the post Mrs M. I would love to learn how to shoot a pistol just for fun! I have shot guns before, because we hunt deer, but I’ve never done a pistol.
